How to Choose Towels

Tips on Buying Beautiful Bath Linens

Until recently, wrapping yourself up in a fluffy towel or bath sheet after a long shower or a relaxing bath was one of those opulent experiences reserved for high-end hotels and spas. Fortunately however, the quality of a good towel no longer equals a high price tag these days, and luxury towels are finding their way into our homes.

If you are in the process of investing in new towels, you have come to the right place. We consulted the experts at Sears' home department to elaborate on the options available to consumers, and to share some helpful buying advice to help make every bath time in your home as luxurious as a day at the spa.

Although in the past we may have taken for granted that a towel was just a towel, not all are created equal today. In fact, the burgeoning market offers a variety of sizes, textiles, designs, purposes, and even eco-friendly options to choose from.

Basics

The most common purchase for today's households are basic cotton towel sets made up of three sizes including a bath towel, a hand (or hair) towel, and a face cloth.

Generally speaking, a standard bath towel will suffice for the job at hand, but nowadays more and more consumers are treating themselves to oversized towels or bath sheets for added comfort and coverage.

Décor plays a big role where colour and design decisions are concerned. Many design savvy shoppers will choose a decorative towel set to accent their guest bathrooms, while settling on more forgiving solid colours to compliment existing colour schemes in those bathrooms that towels are used on a regular basis.

Finally, while you may be tempted to channel spa décor with all white towels, remember they are not always the best choice for guest washrooms or for families with small children.

Cotton 101

Towels are available in three different types of cotton – Egyptian, Supima, and standard.

Egyptian cotton is considered the softest and most absorbent and is the most expensive, out of the three, while Supima is more durable and a little less expensive. Standard cotton is of lesser quality but is the most economical choice.

Some experts maintain that a luxury towel should have a cut or shorn finish instead of the standard loops, as well as a tightly woven fabric for durability and maximum absorbency.

Eco-Friendly & Organic Options

If preserving the environment is a priority for you, rest assured there are numerous budget-friendly organic and eco-friendly options available.

Sustainable bamboo fibers offer the softness and silkiness of cashmere, and are even more absorbent than traditional cotton. Added benefits of bamboo are that it is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and odor resistant.

Certified organic cotton is grown using plants that are genetically unmodified and without harmful pesticides or fertilizers that pollute water sources. Sears' Portico line of certified organic cotton towels are made using the highest sustainable standards and eco-friendly inks and dyes, producing beautiful soft colors that promise to give a natural spa feel to your bathroom.

With these options on hand, there is absolutely no reason not to go green!

Luxury & Designer Brands

If you really want to give an air of luxury to your master bathroom you could turn to Sears' beautiful luxury towel brands like Whole Home's Hotel Collection or Wamsutta's Registry Estate in ultra soft Egyptian Cotton.

A gorgeous set of designer or luxury towels also makes the perfect gift, which you could personalize with monogramming for an added touch of opulence.
