Green Resolutions for the Home

Energy-Efficient and Eco-Friendly Options for the Kitchen, Bedroom and More

With a new year upon us, many of us are making resolutions to live a little greener in 2011. Sears carries a large selection of energy-efficient and eco-friendly products so we turned to their experts for recommendations on where to start making green resolutions in our homes, and advice on what will make the biggest difference in the long run.

From bamboo kitchen supplies to energy-efficient water heaters, there are a multitude of green alternatives for our homes. Here are a few areas you could start:

Kitchen Accessories: Cooking Green

Most of us are blissfully unaware of just how much waste is generated in the kitchen. Opting for greener cookware and kitchen supplies, like the renewable resource products from Sears' Natural Living Collection, is a really good place to start reducing your footprint on the environment.

In the Bedroom: Sleep Easy

Cotton production is a major contributor to the spread of pesticides and toxins in our soil and water. In fact, cotton crops use approximately 16% of the world's insecticides, which is more than any other single crop!

Choosing organic cotton products for your home is an easy (and affordable) way to do your part for the environment. Sears' Portico line of certified organic cotton bedding and towels are made by the highest sustainable standards. They are dyed with eco-friendly inks and dyes, resulting in beautiful soft colors that are guaranteed to give a relaxing feel to your bedroom and bathroom.

Another eco-friendly textile option is bamboo. Bamboo fibers are a renewable natural resource, odor resistant, naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and as soft as high quality cotton.

Window Insulation: Energy Efficient Curtains and Blinds

Once again, trendy bamboo can help you on your earth saving mission with aesthetically pleasing styles created from this highly renewable resource. On the other hand, renewable materials and recycling aren't the only ways to do your part for the environment – energy saving is just as important. Opt for treatments that include an insulating layer that is designed to keep the heat from entering in the summer and the cold from getting in during the winter. Not only will this save the environment, but it will save on your utilities too!

Water Heaters: Energy Star to the Rescue

Another way to save money is to invest in an Energy Star-certified water heater. Energy Star appliances are designed to save you money on your water and energy bills, meaning that they are easier on energy consumption, and thus the environment.
