From Ink Lake: Canadian Stories Selected By Michael Ondaatje
Michael Ondaatje's introduction to the engaging collection From Ink Lake plays down his role as a cultural arbiter, saying, "this anthology is more a reader, a sampling, than my attempt at an official canon. " This deflation is a nice touch, and Ondaatje's selections break many of the rules of the multitude of Canadian story anthologies out there. His own rule, he says, was to choose the story rather than the writer, and this allows him to stretch the notion of story to fit his particular aesthetic. If it moved him, it was in. As such, he has included work not traditionally considered for such collections, including John Kelly's speech to the Royal Commission on the Northern Environment, "We Are All in the Ojibway Circle. " This is not to say that From Ink Lake is short on the most familiar names in Canadian fiction. Margaret Atwood, Timothy Findley, Alice Munro, and Mordecai Richler are there, and Ondaatje opens and closes with stories by Canada's writer's writer, Alistair MacLeod. But even for these usual suspects, the stories selected are not the usual and there is nothing suspect about them. It is a pleasant surprise to see some of the choices Ondaatje has made, and readers will quickly forget the crass use of Ondaatje's high profile to sell the collection as they lose themselves in the vastness that is Canadian short fiction. --Jonathan Dewar Author(s): Michael Ondaatje.
