Kings of Love
Launched by roots-rock players Colin Linden, Tom Wilson and Stephen Fearing as an informal tribute to songwriter Willie P. Bennett, Blackie & the Rodeo Kings used 1999's double disc, Kings of Love, as a way of spreading the love to other songwriters as well as advancing some originals. That all three sing and play guitar makes for some exciting moments on tunes by Murray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, Jules Shear, John Martyn, Fred Eaglesmith, and the aforementioned Bennett. Songs can be as gritty as a dirt road (Eaglesmith's "49 Tons") or as gentle as a leaf blowing in the wind (Linden's "Queen with a Broken Crown, " Bennett's wonderful "If You Have to Choose"). A rousing Mark Johnson call-and-response number, "King of Love, " gives the CD its title, and while the album is perhaps unnecessarily long, the players' good spirits are infectious. --Shawn Conner Binding Audio CD.
