Hanson Brothers - My Game*
You'd think, after two albums, the equation Ramones-style punk+hockey=fun would no longer compute. Not so. On this third disc by Vancouver's Hanson Brothers, the punk quartet named after the ice-skating enforcers in the movie Slap Shot deliver another 15-track smorgasbord of fast 'n' furious three-chord rockers that, against all odds, are a listenable hoot. Anchored by Rob Wright's propulsive bass playing, hockey-themed tunes like the title track, "Honey, I'm Home" and "The Last Canadian Boy" fly out of the speakers with the force of, yes, slapshots. But this side project from members of the more serious punk band NoMeansNo really scores on "Joey Had to Go" and "Get it Right Back. " The former, a tribute to Joey Ramone, is both affecting and funny ("He couldn't count past four/But he didn't need much more") in its remembrance of the leather-clad New Yorker who helped launch a thousand bands, including the Hanson Brothers. "Get it Right Back" is a fantastically catchy cover of an old '70s pop hit. An inspired choice, the song delivers the disc's best moment--when the guitars drop out and leave the chorus-to-die-for pinned to Wright's mighty, rumbling bass.
