Dr. Stompin' Tom Connors has a thing or two to say to folks who think Canadian history is dull. In the liner notes of Sings Canadian History, he explains why such a disc was essential. "The fact is, the people of this country are starvin' for stories and songs about themselves, " he says. "If we don't have it, we're gone. We don't have a country any more. " And so, with characteristic wit and enthusiasm the legendary Maritime singer relates the stories of some of the country's finest on this compilation of historically minded songs culled from every era of Connors's four-decade-long career. Many songs are devoted to great people, both famous and unknown. There are tributes to Canadian music legends Don Messer and Wilf Carter, to Johnny Ware, a man born into slavery who escaped to Canada to become one of Alberta's most famous cowboys, and to Erika Nordby, an Edmonton baby who survived a harsh winter night outdoors in 2001. In "Marten Hartwell Story, " another highlight, Connors tells of how in 1972 an attempt to "save the lives of an Eskimo boy and a pregnant Eskimo woman" went horribly wrong when the rescue plane went down in "the no-man's land of the Northwest Territories. " Disasters are detailed in "Wreck of the Tammy Anne, " "Fire in the Mine, " and "How the Mountain Came Down" (about the Turtle Mountain landslide of 1903), and some of Canada's most renowned inanimate objects get their due in "Bluenose, " "Sable Island, " and "Confederation Bridge. " Sings Canadian History closes with the Connors classic "Name the Capitals" ("Can anyone here name the capital of Saskatchewan? Regina! ") and even comes with a handy map marked with the locations of the stories. While Connors's nasal voice and minimalist approach to rhythm and melody may make him an acquired taste, Sings Canadian History is as entertaining as it is educational. With this largely unprecedented expression of unabashed hoserdom, Stompin' Tom once again does his homeland proud. --Jason Anderson  Binding Audio CD.  Artist(s): Stompin Tom Connors.  Publisher(s): EMI Music Canada.  Label: EMI Music Canada.
