He chooses two immense talents in Larry Grenadier (bass) and Bill Stewart (drums) who play with authority but know when to hold back. The bass on this album is fluid, strong and inventive, while the award-winning drummer shows his commitment to and knowledge of the tradition, providing exciting momentum with imagination and assurance. There are songs old and new, hard-bop swing, sensitive impressions, enjoyable jamming, even a mellow Latin version of John Coltrane's masterpiece "Giant Steps" and the album closes with a tender retrospective as Pat Metheny re-plays "Travels".
