Another Spin Around The Sun
Another Spin Around the Sun begins with choral voices and, for a few seconds, the disc seems headed straight for the Land of Modern Rock Pretension, but at least Toronto vocalist Edwin takes a few interesting twists and turns en route. A solo record following his role as lead singer of jam-friendly rockers I Mother Earth, this 1999 debut swings more often than it rocks. "Theories, " "Trippin', " "Take Me Anywhere, " and "Rush" all have a groovy rhythmic undercurrent augmented by hipster programming and electronic textures. Sure, it's all a little strained, as though the singer had just discovered Beck, but most of the songs work thanks to strong melodies. And Edwin even throws in a few riff-driven rockers to appease fans of his old band. If there's a problem with Another Spin Around the Sun, it's that Edwin occasionally comes across as a blowhard thanks to his over-the-top vocals (Bono--you have so much to answer for) and his lyrics tend to state the obvious ("Ain't it good to be alive! " he declares in "Alive. " Well, yes but. . . ). Give him this--the guy at least has the self-awareness to include a piss-taking (untitled) piece of lounge-y kitsch, complete with theremin, that ends the disc with, literally, a hiccup. --Shawn Conner Binding Audio CD.
