Friends, Moments, Countryside: Selected Columns from Canadian Living, 1993-98

With a title that echoes Shakespeare, this selection of 61 short columns written for Canadian Living magazine between 1993 and 1998 touches on the everyday people and places of Main Street Canada. Gzowski, who came to fame as host of the CBC's much-loved, long-running "Morningside" radio show, was a passionate, intelligent listener, a true Canadian patriot without a scintilla of xenophobia. On their own, these essays might seem sketchy or slight (each is only three to four pages long), but strung together in their dozens, they build up a kind of musical refrain or kaleidoscopic frieze that reflects the heart and soul of Canada. Gzowski visits numerous rural corners of the country (from coast to coast to coast), remembers friends from childhood, meets with the famous (Trudeau, Gretzky), and adds in a few recipes for good measure ("Duck with Forty Cloves of Garlic"). In all cases there is a simplicity that focuses on the intimate details of life with profound appreciation. With his quiet ability to broker intelligent discourse among his often-fractious countrymen, Gzowski embodied Canada. He concludes: "A person has a lot of addresses over a lifetime. If he's lucky, he'll end up where he belongs. " Peter Gzowski, who died in 2002, belonged in and to Canada. --Mark Frutkin  Author(s): Peter Gzowski.  Binding Paperback.  Publisher(s): McClelland & Stewart.  Label: McClelland & Stewart.
