As Neil Young was immersing himself in the post-Beatles Sunset Strip scene, L. A. via Germany-and-Toronto musician John Kay and his Steppenwolf were also going continent-wide with their California-centric hard rock. Tracks like "Born to Be Wild" and "The Pusher" were hits in their time and remain touchstones of the era. (Would Easy Rider have been the same without the powder-keg intro of "Wild"? ) This document of 1970 gigs is occasionally long-winded but always spirited, and if the protests of "Monster" and "Draft Resister" are locked in their Vietnam-era context, the pro-marijuana "Don't Step On the Grass, Sam" sounds increasingly relevant in light of continuing U. S. battles over medical pot use. Needless to say, the set of hits that ends this former double LP--especially, but not only, the funky-butt "Magic Carpet Ride"--is still right on time. A fine listen and a worthwhile alternative to the countless best-ofs bearing the group's name. --Rickey Wright  Binding Audio CD.  Artist(s): Steppenwolf.  Publisher(s): Universal Music Canada.  Label: Universal Music Canada.  Format: Live.
