When it comes to guitar players in Canada, Luke Doucet has made his mark as one of the really great ones, regularly recording and touring with the likes of Sarah McLachlan and Chantal Kreviazuk. Having mastered everything from lap steel to 12-string to banjo and beyond, Doucet has earned the respect of many committed musicians across the country, both as a session player and on his own projects, with Veal or as a solo artist. Doucet's third solo disc Broken (and other rogue states) is charming, filled with Doucet's clever lyrics, wicked guitar licks and an impressive collection of great Canadian contributors. From Oh Susanna to Amos Garrett to Blue Rodeo's Bazil Donovan, Doucet has once again attracted top-level players to his fold, and it definitely shows in the quality of the music. Some songs on the CD are straight-up rootsy ("Wallow"), others are filled with a wicked Delta blues sound ("Keep Her Away From Me"), while the highlight comes in the form of a lush, orchestral-filled tenderness of "No Love to Be Made Here Now. " The common denominator is that any avid fan of strong musicianship can find something to embrace in this CD, and Doucet's gentle vocal style (reminiscent of Daniel Lanois) meshes wonderfully with the songs he writes and the moods he manages to create on each disc. --Denise Sheppard Binding Audio CD.
