Brahma's Dream
Brahma's Dream, the first novel by Calgary author Shree Ghatage, is an extended contemplation of the domestic dramas and crises of a typical Indian household. Set in Bombay in 1948 (the year of independence), the story is essentially character-driven. Mohini, 13, suffers from a wasting disease that causes anemia. The story is told from her point of view, as her mother, Kamala, tends to the intelligent and curious girl, and Keshav, her father, travels incessantly for his engineering work. A young aunt and Mohini's professorial grandfather fill out the Oek family and play important roles in Mohini's life, as do a number of domestic servants and a kindly doctor. The novel takes place almost entirely within the house and its grounds, with a few minor exceptions. Important family and political events (such as Gandhi's assassination and the resulting unrest) happen essentially off-stage. This approach skilfully reflects the experience of the nearly housebound girl whose affliction has caused her to quit school. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish the multitude of characters, including friends, extended family and neighbors, especially since a number of names are used for each, with various suffixes that denote respect. This is a quiet story that comes alive in its details, especially when it comes to the complexities of Indian foods, intimate family relationships, and other mysteries of life on the subcontinent (for example, the difference between nine-yard and five-yard saris). Ghatage writes with a pleasant lyrical touch (an infant's clenched fists are "unopened buds") but the heart of this novel is the courageous, uncomplaining invalid, Mohini. --Mark Frutkin Author(s): Shree Ghatage.
