Tips For Buying The Perfect Maternity Wardrobe

For some expectant mothers, morning sickness and painful backaches are not the only challenges facing them: dressing can prove tricky too!

Maternity Clothing

How many times have you heard a pregnant woman say that she feels like a whale? Thankfully there is a light on the horizon - unflattering overalls and sack dresses are no longer the uniform of pregnancy!

Now-a-days, fashion embraces the beauty of pregnancy. The classics from our mothers' era have been replaced with vibrant colors, flattering cuts, elegant shapes, and most importantly – comfort in style. Now you can step out of your partner's comfortable loungewear and old t-shirts, and into your maternal glow! Read on for useful tips to find flattering clothes that will grow with your pregnancy.

Choosing Pants

One of the most important criteria when selecting your maternity wardrobe is comfort, especially when it comes to pants. As soon as your favorite pair of regular pants don't zip up anymore, its time to turn to maternity pants. Choosing a bigger sized regular pant to accommodate your expanding waistline only prolongs the inevitable, while looking ill-fitted and sloppy.

Maternity pants are now available in five different designs that will expand with your pregnancy:

  • The elastic waistband variety has a semi-low waist and provides good support just under the belly. The design is suited to a more fitted top as it will not show unsightly bumps around the natural waistline.
  • Adjustable elastic waist pants are recognizable by the side buttons holding the elastic band in place. They typically have a higher waistline that sits around the belly button. They can be quite spacious during the early months of pregnancy.
  • The drawstring pant is ample, comfortable and sports a more casual look.
  • The high-waisted pant with back adjustment emulates regular pants in the front while the adjustable back elastic allows you to wear this pant comfortably throughout your pregnancy. This style is also available with side elastics.
  • The 3-in-1 pant is the style that adapts best to the different stages of pregnancy. It is designed with a large panel that can be worn to cover the whole belly, folded once to sit at the belly button, or folded twice for a low rise pant that supports under the belly.

Choosing a Top

It is natural for women to sweat a little more than usual during pregnancy, so natural fibers like cotton or linen are recommended. Synthetic fibers can stimulate sweating.

The rule of thumb for a growing pregnant body is that your back, chest, arms and belly will get bigger in size, but your shoulders won't. The top that will flatter you most throughout your pregnancy should be perfectly fitted in the shoulders when you buy it, while leaving a little extra space for the other areas of your body.

One of the plusses of pregnancy is that your breasts will increase in size, so why not take the opportunity to accentuate your cleavage? Choose an elegant and colorful top that sits close to your body and showcases your new assets!

Regular or Specialty Underwear?

Many women believe that it is possible to wear standard underwear throughout their pregnancy. Unfortunately you will find that your regular underwear will start to get pretty uncomfortable around the end of the first trimester.

Maternity bras are specially designed with a pregnant women's comfort in mind – the different shape of the underwire and the padded cup are just two examples of how specialty underwear caters to an expectant mom. When shopping for a new bra, it is advised to choose one size bigger than what you wear in regular underwear. For example, if you currently wear a 34B, choose a 36C instead. The bra should be comfortable on the smallest clip when you buy it so you can loosen to the 2nd and 3rd clasps as you grow.

Choosing panties is an easier feat as you simply choose the size according to your current pant size. Maternity panties are highly recommended because a larger size in your regular panty will not only roll off your belly but will most likely be too big on your butt!

Finally, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in whatever you wear during your pregnancy. Fashionista or not, you won't be pregnant for very long, despite how it might feel in your 8th month!
